About Sunil Shanker:

Sunil Shanker is one of the leading theatre Actor and Director in Karachi. He graduated from the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in 2009, majoring in acting. He has had the opportunity to work with the ‘giants’ of the theatre world – Zia Mohyeddin, Talat Hussain and Rahat Kazmi.

Since then he has successfully carved a niche for himself, being voted ‘Best Director 2013’ in the Express Tribune awards. He gained recognition after his first play ‘Equus’ at the 2012 NAPA theatre festival, critically acclaimed for his experimental approach. In 2013, Sunil’s play ‘Mantorama’ was selected in the National School of Drama (NSD) festival in New Delhi, India. In 2014, Sunil starred in the famous sculptor, Amin Gulgee’s performance work ‘Where’s the Apple, Joshinder?’ This year he also worked under the direction of UK director, Gregory Thompson, in the Urdu adaptation of Shakespear’s Winter’s tale, a collaboration between NAPA and the British Council.

Apart from these productions, Sunil has acted in and directed several plays over the past few years.

In June 2015 he collaborated with Nida Butt, co-directing the blockbuster musical ‘East is East’, as part of the ‘I Am Karachi’ campaign. Sunil has also worked intensively with the Lyari community, for the project ‘Lyari Stars’, training youngsters who have zero resources to learn the Arts.

In September 2015, he formed his very own Theatre group “ SYNA PRODUCTIONS”. His first production was Edward Albee’s masterpiece, The Goat or, who is Sylvia. He directed, produced and acted in this play, to raving reviews.

Recently he made his debut in the Feature Film, ‘Rahm’, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, to be released in 2016, Directed by Ahmed Allauaddin Jamal, an eminent UK based director.
