Event Details & Reservation

We're reading The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia by Ursula K. Le Guin for March. Le Guin, who died in January, is considered one of the greats of science fiction and fantasy writing.

The Dispossessed, which is part of the Hainish Cycle series of books, is set on two inhabited worlds in a fictional planetary system. One of the worlds has an anarchist system of governance and the other is dominated by two rival states with capitalist and authoritarian systems respectively. These socio-political differences are highlighted through the story of a physicist who travels from one world to the other for work.

As might be obvious already, the book's themes include capitalism, anarchy, freedom, and individualism. The book won several awards when it was published in 1974, including the Nebula and Hugo awards.
