University of Karachi strongly believes in the freedom of expression and carrying out dialogues in order to contribute to the betterment of society. To promote the art of public speaking “Karachi University Debating Society” is organizing its 1st Karachi University National Declamation Contest (KUNDC) to attract the brightest minds from all over the country and give them a chance to voice their speculations.

In KUNDC, each team comprise of two participants and one chaperone. The contest will have two rounds: initial round and final round. However, four best teams and two best individuals (from each category i.e English and Urdu) will qualify for the final round. As we understand the essence of each genre, humorous and serious speeches will be judged separately.

Please read the rules carefully. The host team will not be responsible for the consequences caused by the violation of the rules.


2. Each participating institution is to be represented by a team comprising of two speakers only, one to speak in Urdu and the other in English. One of the speakers is to speak on a serious topic and the other on a humorous one.

3. Individual speakers are not allowed to register.

4. Those selected for the final round will have to deliver new speeches and will not be allowed to repeat their speeches from the initial round.

5. Delivery time for Initial Rounds speeches shall be 4 minutes to 5 minutes. For Final Round, the speech’s time shall be 5 minutes to 6 minutes. Marks will be deducted for failing to wind up within the stipulated time.

6. A speaker making offensive remarks about any important personage or passing controversial religious, political or sectarian remarks shall be immediately disqualified. In such an event, the speaker may be asked to step down from the podium during the speech.

7. The speakers will be assessed by a panel of judges. Judges would base their decision on the content of speeches, proficiency of the respective language, response of the audience, delivery, interpretation of text and pronunciation.

8. Paper reading is not allowed. Those who do so will be disqualified.

9. Speakers should refrain from using Urdu in their English speeches and vice versa.

10. The team that gains the maximum aggregate points will get the team trophy. The two best speakers, from both English and Urdu (serious and humorous category), will also be awarded prizes. Speakers from University of Karachi performing in the contest, will not compete for the prizes.

11. The decision of the judges will be final.
